Registered Nurse Job Position Summary
The Registered Nurse is responsible for utilizing the nursing process to provide individualized nursing care. The nurse assumes the responsibility for the outcome of nursing care during a specified work period. The nurse receives assistance from the full scope of nursing expertise. The nurse has knowledge of and utilizes appropriate age-related patient protocols relating to the physical and psychological needs of adolescent, adult and geriatric female patients as well as neonates. Perinatal and Gyn Services includes childbirth classes, perinatal outpatients, antepartum, labor and delivery, recovery, operating room, post-partum, newborn nursery, follow-up programs, and gynecology. Reassignments in practice may include NICU, Pediatrics, or areas of in-house transfers.
Following a competency based formal orientation, competent practice for general patients is expected. Advanced department specific skills required are labor support, lactation, family care, and technical expertise such as cervical checks, OR care, and fetal monitoring, etc. Refer to department self-assessment checklist for specifics.
The Registered Nurse functions within the scope and standards of nursing practice as outlined in the South Dakota Nurse Practice Act and Administrative Rules. The Sanford Nursing Practice recognizes the Scope and Standards of Practice (2004) and the Code of Ethics for Nurses with Interpretive Statements (2001) as published by the American Nurses Association as the foundation for nursing care delivery.
When students are providing patient care, treatment, and services as a part of their training, any/all employees may be asked to supervise the students.
Required Skills
Required Credentials (Licensure, Certification, or Registration)
Currently licensed with the applicable State Nursing Board and possess multistate licensure privileges as required by the position.
Required Experience
Education/Experience
Graduation from an NLN or AACN accredited nursing program is strongly preferred. Graduate from an approved nursing program is acceptable. Bachelor’s Degree in nursing preferred.
