Position Overview: Project Accountant

As a Project Accountant, you will join the Accounting Department in the New York City metro area and play a vital role in supporting project financial operations. This position focuses on project billing, budget management, and financial coordination, ensuring accuracy, compliance, and timeliness in accordance with established accounting standards and contractual requirements.

The role requires close collaboration with Project Managers, branch offices, and clients, making it ideal for candidates who are detail-oriented, organized, and confident in professional communication.

Key Responsibilities

In this role, you will be expected to:

  • Prepare and submit invoices for government and private-sector clients, supported by complete and accurate documentation.
  • Maintain organized and comprehensive project financial files.
  • Enter and manage budget changes and variance adjustments within the company’s reporting systems.
  • Coordinate billing activities with multiple branch offices to ensure consistency and compliance.
  • Respond to client requests for supplemental financial reports and detailed backup documentation.
  • Communicate proactively with Project Managers regarding project financial status, contract changes, and invoicing requirements.
  • Review unbilled costs and unpaid invoices every month to maximize billing and collections.
  • Verify sub-consultant invoice submissions for compliance with contractual and budgetary limits.
  • Clearly articulate project-related financial issues to both accounting and non-accounting personnel.
  • Perform additional duties as required to support project and company objectives.

Qualifications and Skills

Successful candidates will demonstrate:

  • A Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Business Management, or Business Administration.
  • 0–2 years of relevant accounting experience, particularly in billing and contract interpretation.
  • Familiarity with Deltek Vantagepoint (preferred, but not required).
  • Strong ability to prioritize tasks, manage workflow, and handle competing deadlines.
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and time management skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, and Outlook.
  • A high level of self-discipline, accuracy, and attention to detail, especially under monthly billing deadlines.
  • Professional integrity and the ability to work independently or collaboratively within a team environment.
