The Nursing Licensure Compact (NLC) is an agreement between states that allows nurses to have one license but the ability to practice in other states that are part of the agreement. Originally developed in 2000, by 2015 the license had grown to include 25 states.
What Are Nursing Compact States? The originally titled Nursing Licensure Compact, or NLC, allows registered nurses to work across states that are part of the compact. In other words, nurses can practice in any NLC state without having to obtain additional licenses specific to each state since they have a compact nursing license.

The Nursing Licensure Compact (NLC) removes complications for nurses practicing in multiple states. Nurses from NLC states can work across state lines without having to worry about applying for licensure in each state or being burdened by multiple renewal requirements and fees.
