As of November 13, 2018, the board no longer processes verification requests directly for nurses seeking licensure in another state. Instead, applicants must request official license verification through NURSYS, a national database used by many state nursing boards. This change simplifies interstate licensing procedures and ensures faster, standardized verification for nurses relocating or expanding their professional practice.

Hawaii has also expanded its online services to make licensing more efficient. Through the MyPVL portal, applicants can submit license applications, track their status, and renew professional credentials online. While office access may be limited during certain periods, digital tools allow nurses to manage their licensing requirements more easily. By combining regulatory oversight with modern online systems, the Hawaii Board of Nursing continues to support both patient safety and the professional development of nurses across the islands.

The Hawaii State Board of Nursing will no longer process license verifications for Practical and Registered Nurses. All license verifications for Hawaii LPN or RN nurse licensees who are applying for endorsement into another state shall request verification via the NURSYS website at https://www.nursys.com.

DUTIES:

• This position works in a hospital and is responsible for providing direct patient care through the performance of a variety of nursing support tasks by established methods and procedures.
• The position may work on rotating shifts and in a variety of care units (e.g., SNF, ICF, medical, surgical, etc.).
• The position may also provide home care for patients. For certain positions, possession of a valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATION: Prerequisite Qualifications Required for Positions Providing Care Services in a Skilled Nursing Facility (SNF) or Intermediate Care Facility (ICF)

Certification Required:

• Applicants must have a valid State of Hawaii Nurse Aide Certificate certification and have completed a State-approved training program which demonstrates knowledge of basic nursing skills (i.e., taking vital signs, measuring output, recognition of abnormal signs and symptoms, etc.);
• the aging process;
• first aid;
• patient rights;
• universal precautions;
• infection control;
• body mechanics;
• purpose and benefits of activities of daily living (i.e., eating/feeding, providing fluids, bathing, dressing, etc.);
• purpose and benefits of restorative care (i.e., use and application of assistive devices; range of motion activities; bowel and bladder training; correct use of bedpans, urinals, and/or commodes, etc.);
• basic medical and nursing terminology.
