A registered nurse plays a vital role in delivering patient-centered healthcare, combining clinical expertise with compassionate support. Key Responsibilities in Patient Care
Nurses handle a wide range of clinical responsibilities each day. They administer prescribed medications and treatments according to medical guidelines while closely observing patient responses. This includes managing injections, medications, and laboratory tests while communicating results to both patients and physicians. Nurses also provide direct outpatient care, assist with blood draws and vital sign monitoring, and ensure patient records remain updated through electronic systems such as EPIC.
Education is another major part of the role. Nurses guide patients and their families through treatment plans, explaining medications, diagnostic procedures, nutrition needs, and strategies for maintaining overall health. They also teach patients how to collect samples for testing and help them understand results once physicians review them. By providing clear instructions and reassurance, nurses help patients feel more confident in managing their care.
In addition to clinical duties, nurses contribute to maintaining smooth medical operations. They document patient infusion orders, track drug inventory for infusion therapies, maintain examination rooms, and assist with quality control practices related to medication procurement. Developing personalized care plans based on individual patient needs ensures treatment remains coordinated and effective.
Education and Professional Requirements
Candidates for this position must hold a Bachelor of Science in Nursing and graduate from an accredited nursing program with a valid New York State nursing license. Certifications such as IV certification and ACLS or BCLS training are required, along with strong communication and organizational skills.
