Elementary school teachers usually have one class and they teach their students several different subjects. The curriculum is usually structured around the fundamental subjects of mathematics, science, social studies, language arts, music, art, and reading. The exact structure and pedagogy can vary from school to school, but, for the most part, elementary school focuses on building the foundation for a well-rounded education overseen by teachers who follow students closely through their development. Elementary school teachers are expected to be very hands-on, creating fun and enthusiastic atmospheres within their classrooms and adapting to meet the needs of their students.

Elementary Teacher Job Description: Create, manage and participate in a variety of learning environments and activities that provide opportunities for students to develop to their fullest potential and achieve their learning objectives. Participate collaboratively and professionally with other faculty and staff to promote rigorous learning opportunities, the general well-being of the school, and collective / individual interest of its staff and student body. Actively participate in professional development, practice self-assessment, reflective practice and strive for continuous improvement.

Professional Responsibilities:

  • Maintain accurate records.
  • Communicate with families.
  • Actively participate in all professional learning opportunities and implement new strategies and skills into the daily routine.
  • Work with colleagues as an active member of your professional learning community to grow and develop as an educator. Complete and implement a professional growth plan annually.
  • Maintains confidentiality regarding staff, children and families as well as NLCI management and operations.
  • Exhibit professionalism in daily activities and communication with staff and families.
  • Use a variety of strategies to determine and monitor student progress and level of achievement.
  • Use results of formal testing and a variety of other assessments to evaluate student progress and instructional effectiveness, as required.
  • Modify instructional techniques based on students’ needs and feedback from progress monitoring
  • Provide for varied levels of student performance.
  • Evaluate students’ growth in light of individual progress and inform students, parents, other teachers and administrators of students’ progress as necessary.
  • Follows NLCI policies regarding classroom purchases prior to it being made on behalf of the school.
  • Attend local or regional training and development sessions, as required.

Planning & Preparation:

  • Create standards-based weekly plans with clear objectives for upcoming instructional period: then modify, as needed, based on feedback gained through implementation and evaluation process.
  • Prepare assignments and needed materials before the beginning of each activity.
  • Relate instructional objectives to elementary NLCI curriculum standards and use data to inform decision-making concerning instructional goals.
  • Determine students’ performance using informal and formal testing, formative assessment, and anecdotal data when appropriate.
  • Uses data to create, monitor and implement a personalized learning plan for each student.
  • Implements recommendations from Parent Assurance Reviews (PAR) and Quality Assurance
  • Reviews (QAR), as required by the Principal.

Instruction:

  • Effectively implements NLCI curriculum standards, and best practice teaching strategies that include technology and attention to the 21st Century skills.
  • Present lessons in a clear, well-organized and logical structure, using a clear, easily understood voice that embraces enthusiasm and optimism.
  • Provide students with teacher modeling, guided practice, and scaffolding and support that allows students move toward demonstrating skills and competencies independently.
  • Integrate the 21’ Century Skills of collaboration, communication, creativity and critical thinking into daily learning activities.
  • Demonstrate a sound knowledge of subject matter and integrate technology to support student learning.
  • Model Standard English speech and correct grammar at all times.
  • Use a variety of instructional text and materials including reading and math programs to support standards-based instruction rather than drive your lesson planning. Provide rigorous learning activities that actively engage students in learning tasks that align with NLCI curriculum goals.
  • Use an inquiry and higher order questions and probes to elicit student responses at various cognitive levels.
  • Provide visual and auditory prompts and charts within the classroom environment to support student learning.
  • Provide time and attention equitably among all students while circulating freely and spontaneously around the classroom.
  • Reflect an attitude and behaviors that value diversity and a growth mindset.
  • Provide for varied levels of student performance including multi-level teaching and accommodations, when appropriate.
  • Provide stimulation and reflect a flexibility to spontaneous developments during instruction.
  • Employ strategies that motivate, encourage and promote high performance in all students.
  • Exhibit teacher/student interactions that reflect politeness, warmth, praise, and cooperation.
  • Create a community within the classroom based on cooperation and collaboration among students.
  • Awareness of student’s emotional, social and educational needs.

The Classroom Environment:

  • Maintain a physical environment (indoors and outdoors) which is safe, healthy, neat, attractive, clean, appropriate for students and conducive to learning.
  • Develop and implement an appropriate classroom management system including classroom routines and orderly transition strategies for students.
  • Aid students in developing self-confidence and a positive self-image by providing an environment of acceptance and support for each student.
  • Encourage initiative and a sense of responsibility for learning in students.
  • Provide opportunities for creating learning.

  • Communication & Interpersonal Skills:
    • Exhibits strong interpersonal and communication skills. Creates a responsive and productive
    • working relationship with parents, children, teachers, other staff and the local community by remaining accessible and communicating clearly and concisely.
    • Utilizes technology to effectively communicate with staff, parents and the administrative team.
  • Experience & Credentials:
    • Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education or equivalent.
    • Teacher credential as specified under state regulations.
    • Advanced degree in education preferred.
    • Previous teaching experience preferred.
    • Demonstrated knowledge of and proficiency with technology and commitment to the unique role it plays in the educational arena of the 21st Century.
