Autism is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by impaired social interaction, verbal and non-verbal communication, and restricted and repetitive behavior. Parents usually notice signs in the first two years of their child’s life. The signs typically develop gradually, but some children with autism will reach their developmental milestones at a normal pace and then regress.
The Special Education Teacher (Structured Autism Class) provides individual education programs for students manifesting behavior, academic and social-communication deficits characteristic of autism spectrum disorders, whom cannot be remediated in other Special Education programs or in the regular classroom.
The Special Education Teacher (Structured Autism Class) provides individualized education programs to students. The teacher is responsible for establishing a positive educational environment, developing, implementing and relating the daily activities of the students to the core curriculum. Through continuous collaboration with a variety of individuals and groups, including parents, district and county personnel and various agencies, this individual provides for the academic, communication, social and emotional growth of each student by using a variety of instructional strategies. This individual continually assesses each student’s progress to maximize his or her fullest potential.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
- Experience teaching or student teaching special education students with significant behavior problems, working on student IEPs;
- Skill in providing training in concept development, communication, self-help, pre-vocational and social/behavioral skills, preparing and maintaining reports and records, progress monitoring;
- Knowledge of appropriate teaching strategies and reinforcement procedures, techniques used to address and deal with behavior and communication disorders (e.g., Applied Behavior Analysis, Positive Behavior Supports);
- Ability to maintain appropriate records, work and communicate effectively with students, parents and public agencies, maintain a flexible schedule, travel to various locations;
QUALIFICATIONS

- MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Valid California Moderate/Severe Special Education credential;
- Demonstrated experience successfully teaching or student teaching special education students with significant behavior problems;
- Ability to lift up to 40 pounds.
- DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Experience teaching students with moderate to severe developmental disabilities (e.g., Intellectual Disabilities, Autism Spectrum Disorders) and significant behavior problems;
- Experience as a general education classroom teacher;
- Knowledge of basic sign language;
- One (1) year of successful experience in a California school district or County Schools Office.
RESPONSIBILITIES and DUTIES
- Establish a positive and structured environment for students to access their education;
- Assess students’ skills to determine their needs and to develop teaching plans;
- Provide individualized/differentiated instruction to students utilizing research-based strategies;
- Teach and mentor students as a class, in small groups, and one-on-one;
- Provide adequate supervision for all students;
- Develop daily instructional plans, including Individual Education Plans (IEPs);
- Adapt lessons utilizing research-based strategies to meet the needs of students (differentiated instruction);
- Implement IEPs, assess students’ performance, monitor and track their progress (including formative assessments);
- Update IEPs throughout the school year to reflect students’ progress and goals;
- Plan, organize, and assign activities that are specific to each student’s abilities;
- Assist students in age-appropriate activities and behaviors;
- Interact with parents, district and county personnel and public agencies;
- Discuss student progress with parents, teachers, counselors, and administrators;
- Prepare and help students transition from grade to grade and after graduation;
- Assist in the coordination of student’s general education program;
- Maintain accurate student reports and current records;
- Prepare various forms of correspondence (including parent notifications and administrative requests);
- Perform related duties as assigned.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Physical Abilities include some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling; some climbing and balancing; some stooping, kneeling, crouching and/or crawling; hearing, speaking, observing and significant fine finger dexterity. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Generally the job requires 15% sitting, 40% walking and 45% standing and the ability to lift or move up to 40 pounds. The job is performed under minimal temperature variations, a generally hazard free environment, and in a clean atmosphere.
LEVEL OF CONTACT WITH CHILDREN:
- May/will have unsupervised contact with children.
- Requires full background check and TB exam.
- Requires physical.
- Current First Aid/CPR Certification.
DRIVING PRIVILEGES:
- May be called upon to drive on agency business.
- Needs acceptable MVR and appropriate insurance coverage.
TRAINING:
- Needs to successfully complete all required agency training indicated for this position.
