Department of VA: Education Program Specialist – Birmingham, AL

This Education Program Specialist position is located in Geriatric and Research, Education, and Clinical Center (GRECC) Service on Department of Veterans Affairs. The United States Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) is a government-run military veteran benefits system with Cabinet-level status. It is the United States government’s fourth-largest department, after the United States Department of Defense, the Department of Health and Human Services, and the Department of Education. Job duties is:

• The selected develops multidisciplinary geriatric clinical and didactic curricula for VAMC staff, GRECC staff, and trainees, which includes physicians, nurses, and allied health workers.
  Incorporates state-of-the-art research findings into the program and addresses major issues in health care practice and delivery in geriatrics.
• Provides consultation to other VAMCs, affiliated universities, and community organizations.
• Develops geriatric and gerontology educational and training programs that can be disseminated nationally as a model for health care professionals from a wide range of disciplines.
• Develops and implements strategies for exporting educational, training, and clinical models developed and evaluated within the GRECC to other VA and non-VA facilities.
• Participates with other GRECC Associate Directors of Education and Evaluation and Office of
• Geriatrics and Extended Care in national planning meetings to develop VA-wide geriatric educational policy.
• Serves as faculty and educational consultant to VA facilities at the local, regional, and national levels in the areas of geriatrics and gerontology, education process, adult education principles, education strategic planning, and program evaluation and measurement.
• The selectee plans develop, coordinates and implements an evaluation program for all three components of GRECC: research, education, and clinical.
• The selectee must have a mastery of the principles, theories, and practices of geriatric education and a wide range of quantitative and/or qualitative methods for the assessment and improvement of program effectiveness and skill.

Basic Requirements:

Degree: that included or was supplemented by at least 24 semester hours in a field related to the work of the position to be filled, of which at least 9 semester hours must have been in education courses.

Combination of education and experience — at least 24 semester hours in a field related to the work of the position to be filled, of which at least 9 semester hours must have been in education courses, plus appropriate experience or additional education. The experience must reflect the level and kind described in C below.
or
Four years of experience that demonstrated a thorough understanding of the principles and practices underlying the work of this series. This experience must have been of such character and diversity to demonstrate that the applicant possesses an understanding of the field comparable to that normally acquired through successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university.
or
At least 1 full academic year of professional teaching experience. This experience is defined as full and primary responsibility, under general supervision, for instruction of assigned students in an accredited school or institution. This includes responsibility for preparing and presenting lessons and for evaluating students’ progress, including a determination of the students’ success or failure according to established criteria. Serving in an assistant capacity to a professor without the authority to determine the students’ success or failure to meet course requirements does not meet this criterion.

Time-in-grade: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements.

Specialized Experience: Experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at a GS-13. Examples of specialized experience include positions that demand all the skills associated with both program evaluation (formative and summative) and education program development such as Education Directors and Associate Education Directors with experience in developing multidisciplinary geriatric clinical and didactic curricula or may include experience conducting performance consultations; educational planning; needs assessment facilitation; learning intervention development and implementation; and planning, designing, and implementing educational/learning activities in a variety of modalities (e.g. satellite, online learning, face-to-face seminars, etc.).
