What is Junior Accounting? definition is An entry-level position in an accounting department. A college degree in accounting is usually a prerequisite for this position. Other desirable attributes include mathematical aptitude and analytical ability. A junior accountant would usually be supervised by a senior accountant or accounting manager. Duties and responsibilities vary with the organization, but generally include posting journal entries, updating financial statements, preparing monthly financial reports, calculating payroll taxes, auditing and maintaining accounts receivable and payable.

Junior Accountant Job Description: Responsible for handling all financial transactions for clients of the program, including the preparation of court-mandated reports.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Prepare client budgets, with assigned case workers.
  • Prepare all checks to pay client expenses, in accordance with the budget.
  • Ensure all client deposits are made. Investigate missing deposits.
  • Prepare monthly bank reconciliations.
  • Work with departmental benefits specialist to ensure client’s benefits are maximized, including review accounts for SSI and Medicaid over or under-resourced, feasibility of trusts, burial accounts, food stamps, etc.
  • Track and log client investment accounts.
  • Prepare court-mandated Annual Accountings and Inventories and Final Accountings for client discharges when needed. Prepare the reconciliation of final accounts.
  • Assist the Guardianship Client Accounts Manager with the preparation of tax returns, as requested.
  • Generate client reports as needed.
  • Perform other various accounting and administrative tasks as assigned.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
Associates Degree (A.A. or A.S.) or Certificate in Accounting or a minimum of two years experience in accounting.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:
Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commission, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.

REASONING ABILITY:
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Computer literate; ability to work with a range of computer programs including financial database such as Quicken and Quickbooks, spreadsheets, database and check printing and word processing programs. Good interpersonal skills, able to communicate with all levels of staff and clients effectively.
