Software Engineer Specific Job Description
Responsible for computer systems technical support in a Laboratory environment comprised of Sun Solaris, LINUX, SGI UNIX, IRIX, and MS Windows-based real-time simulation and development systems, including software development, systems integration, operations, and maintenance in a regulated environment. Individuals will work with other engineers, customers, and vendors in configuring, integrating, modifying, upgrading, troubleshooting, and supporting configuration management of all systems OS, drivers, and applications software. Individuals must have an overall knowledge of all system and network administration tasks on the high platforms including managing user accounts, data backup, networking, security, risk management, software license management, etc.
Candidates must exhibit excellent problem-solving skills, be a team player, possess excellent communications and interpersonal skills, and be able to adjust work schedule periodically to support program activities.
Applicant selected will be subject to a government security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information. Candidate must be capable of obtaining TS clearance.
The following comment is not targeted at any particular salary grade level: The successful candidate will be compensated based on market rates and internal equity for the work to be performed. The successful internal applicant may be transferred laterally (the same salary grade) with or without a change in compensation or may be promoted to a higher salary grade with or without an upward adjustment in compensation.
Standard Software Engineer Job Description
The software Engineer will be Plans, conducts, and coordinates software development activities. Designs develop documents, tests, and debugs software that contains logical and mathematical solutions to business/mission problems or questions in computer language for solutions using data processing equipment. Applies the appropriate standards, processes, procedures, and tools throughout the development lifecycle. Applies knowledge of computer hardware and software, subject matter to be programmed in business/mission applications, information processing techniques used, and information gathered from system users to develop software. Corrects program errors, prepares operating instructions, compiles documentation of program development, and analyzes system capabilities to resolve questions of program intent, output requirements, input data acquisition, programming techniques, and controls. Ensures software standards are met.
Required skills
Experience in supporting/managing Solaris 9/10, MS Windows, IRIX, LINUX, and UNIX OS platforms in a dynamic networked real-time and development environment.
Desired skills
Experience with scripting, C/C++, PERL, and MS Office applications including VISIO also wanted. Any additional vendor provided advanced technical training and certifications.
Typical Minimums
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college in a related discipline, or equivalent experience/combined education, with two years of professional experience; or no experience required with a related Master’s degree. Considered experienced, but still a learner.
