Alternative Investments/Strategic Advisors – Boston/New YorkInvestment Analyst The Alternative Investments Group/Strategic Advisors (AIG/SA) within Investment and Wealth Management is seeking a highly motivated individual to join the AIG/SA investment team. This is a position for an individual who demonstrates a passion for investing, strong intellectual and analytical capability, internal motivation, and drive, and high personal integrity.

The Alternative Investments and Strategic Advisors teams construct and oversee a variety of third-party managed investment products, including mutual funds, separate accounts, hedge funds, funds of hedge funds and private equity funds of funds. The underlying managers of these products share essential characteristics, including an investor orientation, integrity in their operations, focus on fundamental, bottom-up investment analysis, excellent long-term investment performance, and preservation of investor capital.

The AIG/SA investment team is responsible for the selection and oversight of the underlying managers. The SA fund managers are part of our hybrid open architecture platform of equity and fixed income investment managers whose investment products are used in multiple facets of our Investment and Wealth Management business. Although the preference is for this role to be filled in Boston, we are open to considering candidates in New York as well.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop an understanding of the overall investment philosophy of our firm and the AIG/SA criteria to be used in the manager selection and oversight process
  • Engage in independent analysis of third party managers’ portfolio holdings to gain an in-depth knowledge of the positions and to understand how the managers implement their investment philosophies
  • Think critically about managers’ portfolios to formulate insightful and well-informed questions
  • Track ongoing themes in manager portfolios to ensure consistent implementation of investment philosophy
  • Aid in the manager selection process as well as current research and manager oversight process, especially as relates to the SA mutual fund platform
  • Assist in the production and distribution of quarterly and monthly analysis and reporting •Develop a solid working relationship with AIG/SA’s third-party managers, fund sub-advisors, and external consultants
  • Prepare quarterly commentaries on each SA fund detailing performance attribution, investment theses for portfolio investment additions and deletions, portfolio positioning and manager outlook
  • Develop SA and AIG marketing materials
  • Develop written materials for, and be an active participant in, periodic investment policy committee meetings
  • Participate in manager due diligence process by way of conference calls, manager interviews, and on-site manager visits
  • Attend industry conferences where applicable
  • Develop the ability to assist Relationship Managers in Investment and Wealth Management with ad hoc requests related to the platform of managers
  • Become proficient with analytical and reporting software as well as other relevant data collection methods
  • Help to maintain and systemize the group’s records of meetings, conference calls, manager visits and other research undertakings
  • The candidate may also be asked to participate from time to time in similar activities related to the alternative investment products and third party managers

Qualifications:

  • A four-year college degree is mandatory (a GPA of 3.0 or higher is required) •CFA/CAIA accreditation or MBA helpful but not required
  • 2+ years of related experience in investment management and/or investment analysis •Strong conceptual and critical thinking skills
  • A demonstrated commitment to proactive quality work
  • Outstanding written communication skills and solid oral communication skills
  • Self-starter mentality, with a desire to learn
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a team atmosphere
  • The candidate will be asked to supply a writing sample

Required experience: 2 – 5 years

Minimum required education: Bachelor’s Degree
