Job Description: The Systems Software Engineer is accountable for planning, installing, configuring, monitoring, troubleshooting and maintaining all UniVerse Systems within the Enterprise to ensure optimal operation of the mainframe and installed applications.  The Systems Software Engineer handles assignments of a more complex nature with limited direction/guidance and provides direction and provides guidance and support for large IS Projects.  Interacts on a regular basis with people at all levels within the company.

Accountabilities

  • Ensures optimal performance of the UniVerse Systems by proactively conducting ongoing performance monitoring and by tuning/adjusting as necessary
  • Effectively maintains the UniVerse Systems by performing maintenance, patching, and application upgrades as needed
  • Effectively teams with the UNIX Systems Administrators to insure that in a timely manner the planning, compatibility, performance, growth, and quality is maintained between UNIX and UniVerse
  • Provide support to the application developers/programmers by providing technical knowledge, guidance, and when necessary, application coding
  • Ensure applications are effectively set-up in UniVerse, available to users, meeting or exceeding end user performance criteria and that system security requirements are met
  • Create and maintain an optimal operating environment on the UniVerse Systems
  • Ensure compliance with all Mouser enterprise security requirements on UniVerse Systems
  • Provide leadership and assistance in developing the skills of the applications developers/programmers
  • On a regular basis develop recommendations for improving techniques, processes and procedures
  • Provide standards and best practices for Mouser IS by developing and maintaining Policies, Procedures and other related documentation
  • Considers all aspects of project such as hardware design, hardware limitations, performance, format of desired results and any other system constraints by working with project management
  • May design or recommend design of applications code and/or defect resolutions
  • Work on moderate to high number of assignments
  • Maintain contemporary knowledge of industry trends, concepts, and techniques
  • Develop and maintain subject matter expertise in one or more areas of Mouser’s applications and/or technologies
  • Is on-call for any UniVerse System or application problems

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or related field -or- 8+ years relevant experience in lieu of Degree
  • Five (5) to ten (10) years Relevant Experience

Qualifications, Skills & Certifications

  • Working knowledge of at least two contemporary computer programming language compatible with the applications being supported (UniVerse Basic or PICK Basic, C or C++, Java, and .NET are some examples)
  • Strong database design knowledge
  • Working knowledge of commonly used concepts of concepts, practices, procedures within the field of programming, and basic knowledge of business systems analysis (examples include: inter process communications, utilizing C libraries in UNIX, performance tuning)
  • Very Good ability to communicate technical information to non-technical audiences (verbally and written)
  • Excellent ability to solve problems
  • Possess the ability to assume leadership role (technical, team, functional)
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Positive ability to work in team environment
  • Possesses very good interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work on multiple assignments and effectively manage own time and priorities
  • Ability to take and follow direction
  • Working knowledge of software engineering and systems architecture
